What Is an Afghan and Why Choose One?
An afghan is more than something to keep you warm. It can add colour and texture to a room, carry memories from one generation to another and become part of everyday family life.
In simple terms, an afghan is a blanket or throw that is usually knitted or crocheted. It may be made in one continuous piece, in strips or from smaller motifs such as granny squares that are joined together.
A Little History
The word “afghan” was being used in English for decorative textiles by the 1800s. The name is generally connected to the colourful, patterned textiles and shawls associated with Afghanistan and the surrounding region.
Over time, the term became widely used in North America for handmade knitted or crocheted blankets. Afghans became especially familiar in homes because they could be made in many colours and patterns, often using yarn saved from other projects.
How Is an Afghan Different from a Blanket or Comforter?
“Blanket” is a broad word that can describe many types of bed coverings and throws. A comforter is usually made from two layers of fabric with filling between them, giving it a thicker, puffier construction.
An afghan is created by forming the fabric itself, one stitch at a time. Depending on the yarn and pattern, it can feel light and breathable or thick and very warm.
Afghans are often used across the end of a bed, over the back of a chair or on the sofa for chilly evenings, although they can also be made large enough to cover a bed.
Why Choose a Handmade Afghan?
The greatest difference is how personal it can be. Colours can be chosen to match a room, represent a favourite team or celebrate a wedding, new baby or other special occasion. The pattern and size can also be adjusted for the person who will receive it.
Unlike a mass-produced comforter, a handmade afghan has its own character. It may take many hours to complete, and that time becomes part of its value. With proper care, it can remain in a family for years and become a keepsake connected to a particular person, place or memory.
I have made many afghans over the years, and each one has been different. That is what I enjoy most about custom work. A practical item can also be something meaningful, created especially for you.
